The
Apple iPhone 4S is the 5th generation of Apple’s smartphone and the successor to the very popular
iPhone 4 which received mixed reviews when it was released, mostly due to a faulty antenna
design. The 4S has corrected the antenna issue and although it has several mostly internal updates, it
is otherwise fairly similar. This means that the screen size remains at 3.5 inches and the design
is not much different from an iPhone 4. Both the front and back of the phone are made of glass with a metal
band around the edge containing the antenna. However, the internals of the 4S have definitely
been beefed up from its predecessor and a new voice-based assistant, Siri has been added. Runs over 350,000 Apps from
the App Store and has a full web-browser and email program as well as a built-in GPS, iPod, 8 MP camera and HD Video
camera.

The first thing that is noticeable about the iPhone 4S is the design. Although it looks much like the 4, there is no doubt that this phone is still in a class of its own in the design department. The combination of the metal and glass oozes elegance and the finish is superb. The 3.5-inch Retina display of the 4S is identical to the one on the iPhone 4, which is excellent. Colours are very good and with a pixel density of 326ppi, individual pixels cannot be seen. However, the display still lags behind the SuperAmoled HD display of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus in terms of contrast and viewing angles. The 4S runs on iOS 5 along with Siri, the much-hyped voice-based assistant. The truth is that in the UK, Siri is still running in a reduced state compared with the American version, with the service being unable to find addresses, maps and traffic outside of the US. Also, Siri does have a problem with determining accents that deviate from the standard British accent, especially heavy dialects. On the whole, Siri is a great thing to play around with, but in real life it's not that useful until Apple improve it, which they have promised to do in the coming months. The dual-core processor of the phone and the better GPU help load pages and apps even faster than before. The camera has been upgraded to 8 megapixels, and still offers excellent photo quality. iOS 5 is still a great OS, but power users will find the tweaking options in Android to be better. However, the App Store is still ahead of the Android Market with better premium apps. On the whole, the iPhone 4S is an excellent alternative to Android phones and users who are design-conscious and who are not Android enthusiasts will find it hard to beat.
