The
Sony Ericsson Xperia ray is a smaller version of the Xperia Arc S with a slightly slower processor and no HDMI port.
Otherwise, the phone shares an identical, albeit smaller display and the same Adreno 205 GPU and 512MB of RAM. The
phone currently runs on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) with an update to 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) on the way. The phone
has a 1GHz Scorpion CPU and an 8MP camera which can also record 720p video. Unlike the Arc S, the ray has a front facing
camera for video calls. There is a 4GB memory card present in the box for storage which can be expanded to 32GB. The
phone also has a 1500mAh battery just like the Arc S.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia ray has a display smaller than most phones with identical specs. Thus, it is much more compact than other phones like the Xperia Arc S and has very few competitors in this niche. The Xperia Ray is very well designed and is quite slim making it a good looking phone. The display of the Ray is one of best out there and it has a resolution of 480 x 854 pixels, which on a 3.3-inch display translates to a highly sharp 297ppi pixel density. The display produces extremely good colours, which are even better than those of the iPhone 4. The device performed very well, with no freezing or lag. The device used Sony Ericsson’s custom Android skin, named Timescape UI which felt quite polished and added features like TrackID. The loudspeaker of the phone did not perform well and wasn’t very loud. The phone’s music player was quite good, with instant access to YouTube but the video player didn’t have DivX support and hence lacked support for a few formats. The Ray’s camera took good pictures but they wer'nt quite as good as the ones taken on the Xperia Arc S. The same was the case with the 720p videos. The web browser of the phone was quite good with Flash support but the smaller screen did hinder the experience a bit. On the whole, the Xperia ray is an excellent phone and one which is an ideal choice for those who are not so keen on the larger phones of today like the Arc S or the Galaxy S II. Also, the phone is available at a very reasonable price which is only slightly higher than the Galaxy Ace which has much lower-quality hardware. The phone is also an excellent alternative to the iPhone 4 with its great display and good overall performance at a cheaper price. All in all, the phone packs quite a lot for the price it is currently going for. However, if you could spend some extra cash for the HTC Sensation XE, you would get a dual-core processor with better performance and Beats audio but lose the portability of the Xperia ray.
